Recapping Reconnected 2025
Reconnected is our yearly contest hosted on our custom LittleBigPlanet server, Beacon. This year’s theme was ‘Blast to the Past.’ You can learn more about Reconnected 2025 by checking out our criteria post which has all the information our judges used to score levels!
How Levels Were Chosen
LBP Union’s Creative Works Administration (CWA) is in charge of organizing and judging Reconnected each year. We also invited some other partners from our team from the Union Space Corps and Starguard to widen the judging pool. If team members participated in the contest, they were barred from judging.
The judging scoring sheet was made based on the criteria listed in the original post announcing Reconnected 2025. If a level qualified, it was added to the form. Judges were asked to score from 1–5 on a scale for various categories such as gameplay, visual fidelity, and how well the level matched the contest theme.
Once a judging deadline elapsed, we counted up all the points to find the levels for each game that had the most points. This determined the winners and runner ups for each game.
Judging Team
Our judging team is proudly composed of the following team members:
- Ryankz11 : Minister of Inspiration
- KubacaGoomba : Minister of Relations
- adsffff : Starguard Lieutenant
- potatoboii_ : Creative Works Administration Advisor
- GodOfSackboyz : Starguard Sergeant
- m88youngling: Lead Protector
Room for Improvement
This year, six judges decided the fate of the contest. Each year, we are deeply interested in ensuring that contests are fair and judged with the highest standard of creative integrity. One of the best ways to do that is to widen our judging pool.
You can help! We need talented and experienced creators to join the Creative Works Administration as advisors to help judge contests, identify high quality levels deserving of team picks, and to cultivate a higher standard of quality across Beacon. Apply to join the CWA today!

This level stood out immediately for its stunning presentation and inventive mechanics. The visuals are consistently breathtaking, with lush green environments and exceptional lighting. There’s even a clever homage to the Move Pack and Prehistoric Moves cursor system. The integration of the cursor mechanic into platforming challenges adds a layer of creativity that impressed us! That innovation and this level’s polish and atmosphere are something we want to see more of across levels on Beacon.
That said, a few areas could be refined. Some players noted that the cursor controls felt a little janky in spots, with wall-jumping and vine interactions occasionally frustrating. Checkpoint placement was also a sticking point, as failing certain obstacles meant replaying long sections, which could break the flow. A bit more guidance in highlighting the intended path would also help smooth the experience for less dexterous players.
Minor critiques aside, this level’s ambition, artistry, and engaging gameplay clearly captured the spirit of Reconnected 2025’s theme. When Time Breaks is a worthy winner of the Reconnected 2025 LBP3 category!

We are suckers for eerie atmospheres, and this level delivers. Heavy rain, fog, and spooky dreamlike sequences are striking themes of this level. This mood alone make it one of the most evocative entries of Reconnected 2025. The level is filled with dream-world transitions to Sackboy’s past that we found frightening!
There are some problems with the level. Monotonous stair climbing may seem familiar to long-time players who are used to RPG levels with more realistic structures, but it becomes a bit of a chore in this level going up and down. In the same vein, there are some UX concerns judges had related to things like non-interactable ladders. There are also some mechanics that simply failed to allow judges to complete the level. One judge found the level soft-locked after sleeping in the bed at the beginning.
Despite these problems, The Lighthouse of Dreams excels as a haunting, atmospheric journey that ties deeply into the history of LittleBigPlanet and this contest’s theme. It’s a standout entry and a worthy winner of the LBP2 category!

Nostalgia is a strong force, and this level wields it like a Windows XP desktop. You’ll see plenty of glass windows through this platformer, featuring MS Paint, Newgrounds, and even a jetpack section themed after Minesweeper. TPOTX transformed an early 2000’s computer desktop into a platforming playground, a blast to the past indeed! This level also makes great use of the image import tool, something that modern creators might consider using more often.
This level is not the prettiest. That being said, LittleBigPlanet 1 is the most challenging of the three main titles to create visually appealing content. There might have been better ways to present the same theme while making the level look a bit more professional. For example, cleaning up the shapes of certain platforms, and adding more checkpoints would have improved the experience.
Despite these critiques, An Upload to Remember is a short and sweet journey through the early Internet. Its creative and humor take a twist on what we originally had in mind for the ‘Blast to the Past’ theme and make it a memorable entry that we’re proud to award as the winner of the LBP1 category!

“What a great concept! The minesweeper part was my favourite.” – QuArtz_
Runner Ups
There were a lot of excellent levels submitted this year! We want to take a moment to recognize the best runner ups of Reconnected 2025. The following levels earn their creators a Team Pick!

This is a fun level! Accidental Time Traveler drops Sackboy into the Wild West after a botched science experiment in a back alley. As you platform through the desert, the scientists from the present send you items through the time machine to aid you in your travels, which is a funny and novel idea. The ‘time break’ moments with the starry-sky and purple-glow effects are especially appealing. The level is also fairly long, which is more than welcome at Reconnected!
Although the visuals are solid, they are missing some polish. We think that the level could benefit from stronger visual fidelity that could help make scenes like the desert and the city feel more immersive. More attention to lighting and environmental details could help make this level feel more alive.
Those critiques aside, Accidental Time Traveler is well-rounded and is exactly one of the themes we had in mind when we started the contest. Its humor, narrative, and engaging gameplay make it worthy of a team pick that we are proud to have on Beacon!

“That was really good! It plays well, looks nice and has a surprising amount of cutscenes all in one level, good job!” – RandomSackThing

This level channels classic LBP vibes, and PhantomstromLBPU does exactly that in this level. This is a long and challenging platformer that pays homage to the Temples theme from LBP1. Its atmosphere is strong, and features all the trappings of a classic LBP community platformer like hidden prize bubbles and branching paths. It’s a rewarding test of skill for experienced LBP players.
That being said, that rewarding experience is one of this level’s greatest shortcomings. Although there are some very skilled players among our team, many of us are unfortunately not very talented parkour artists. Some jumps in this level are on the borderline of requiring speedrunning techniques like edge grabs and layer glitches. The branching paths, while always welcome in a level, can be a little confusing at times. The ‘Blast to the Past’ theme is also not as strong here as it is in other levels, which makes it a bit easy to forget the theme when playing.
Regardless, PhantomstromLBPU is a talented creator who succeeds in making Walking With Elephants a rewarding and excellent platformer that we would love to see more of on Beacon! It’s more than worthy of a team pick and we are overjoyed and thankful that it’s a part of our contest!

“Epic” – TPOTX
