On March 5th, Sony released an update that might have ruined your day. That update is version 4.92, and without it, you can’t connect to PlayStation Network. That means you can’t play LittleBigPlanet online with Beacon custom servers! Fortunately, the homebrew community was prepared this year, and new custom and hybrid firmware was made right away. Let’s dive into how to update your modded PS3 to 4.92 without losing all of your favorite features in this easy-to-follow guide.
Is This Tutorial For You?
This tutorial is for players who already have a modded PlayStation 3. If your PlayStation 3 isn’t modded yet and you want to play on LittleBigPlanet custom servers, check out our tutorial here for the most up to date modding tutorials.
Before you continue, consider which type of modded PlayStation 3 you have. This tutorial focuses on these two types of firmware for modded PS3s:
- Hybrid Firmware (HFW): the software that makes this possible is called Homebrew Enabler (HEN). This must be ‘enabled’ every time you boot the PS3. Otherwise, it acts almost identically to an official firmware (OFW) console.
- Custom Firmware (CFW): full jailbreak. Does not need to be manually enabled at boot. This tutorial will cover updating to Evilnat PEX 4.92.
Oops! I Accidentally Updated to 4.92 OFW!
If you accidentally updated to Sony’s official 4.92 firmware, this section is for you. If you did this by mistake, you lost access to your modded features. You probably also lost the ability to boot a patched version of LittleBigPlanet as well. If you’re running HFW/HEN, the exploit works on 4.92, so there’s no need to panic.
If you’re using CFW, you may be in a little bit of a pickle for a while until 4.92 is supported by bgtoolset, the exploit tool you would have used to get CFW in the first place.
How to Update HFW/HEN to 4.92
Here’s how you can update HFW/HEN to 4.92 to get back online with LittleBigPlanet custom servers:
- First, update to the latest version of WebMAN mod.
- Download the HFW PS3UPDAT.PUP file from PSXPlace.
- Place the .PUP file on a FAT32 USB stick inside this folder structure: PS3 -> UPDATE
- Insert the USB drive into your PlayStation 3.
- Turn on your PlayStation 3 and navigate to the update system software section. Choose Update from storage media. You should see the 4.91 update file from the storage media. It should have a unique terms and conditions page for the open-source software. Go ahead and install it.
- When the install is complete, the last step is to enable HEN. The easiest way to do this is to use the PS3 web browser to navigate to ps3xploit.me and use the HEN Auto Installer or one of their other options. Follow any instructions on screen. If ps3xploit.me isn’t available, try using our mirror at hen.lbpunion.com. We are not responsible for any damage done to your console, so back up everything first!
The process should be similar to tutorials you may have followed previously to enable HEN for the first time, like tutorials by MrMario2011.

Update Your CFW PlayStation 3 to Evilnat 4.92 PEX
Evilnat develops the most popular CFW software for PlayStation 3. Here’s how you can update your jailbroken PS3 to the latest Evilnat 4.92 PEX firmware:
- Download the PS3UPDAT.PUP for Evilnat CFW 4.92 from PSXPlace. The first option (PEX) is usually the best. However, if your PS3 is missing a Blu-Ray drive or your Bluetooth isn’t functional, you’ll need to choose an alternative appropriate option from the list, otherwise you might soft brick your console!
- Place the .PUP file in this following folder structure on a FAT32 USB drive: PS3 -> UPDATE
- Insert the USB drive into your PS3 and turn the console on.
- Navigate to the update system software section and choose Update from storage media.
- Install the update. After this, you should be done!
You’re Updated!
