PlayStation 3 Firmware 4.92 Released

At 12:14 AM EST, Assistant Beacon Support Director PorkchopGMX announced the discovery that PlayStation 3 update 4.92 has been released. As a result, anyone playing Beacon while using a PlayStation 3 will not be able to use PlayStation Network on hybrid (HFW/HEN) and custom firmware (CFW). HFW or CFW are required to use a version of LittleBigPlanet patched to use custom servers. This means you won’t be able to play online without taking extra steps!

For the past several years, Sony has been releasing new updates for the PlayStation 3 that add new Blu Ray keys to the system. This allows you to play the latest Blu Ray movies on the PS3. However, it can be a major pain for LittleBigPlanet players that rely on custom and hybrid firmware to run patched games like LittleBigPlanet.

This is what you’ll see when you attempt to connect to PSN. Don’t update!

There are two things you can do to get back online. These are wait for new custom or hybrid firmware or spoof your firmware.

Update to 4.92 Custom or Hybrid Firmware (Recommended)

We recommend updating to new custom or hybrid firmware that matches the new version. There are two benefits to this,

  1. It’s generally considered more trustworthy to go this route. Most people use this method and we’ve never seen anyone experience issues with PlayStation moderation. However, remember everything that you do is at your own risk.
  2. You will have the updated Blu Ray keys with this method, meaning you can run the latest Blu Ray movies on your PS3.

Spoof Your Firmware

Over the past few years, we have generally discouraged this method because we’ve seen fewer people doing it, making it somewhat less trustworthy. However, we have yet to hear from anyone who has a bad experience with this with PlayStation moderation. Assuming there is no risk of a console ban, the main thing you will miss out on are the new Blu Ray keys.

How to Spoof PS3 Firmware

Here’s a basic tutorial to spoof your firmware based on steps written by Beacon Moderation Lead Yukix64. To spoof your firmware to connect to PlayStation Network with a PS3 with firmware lower than 4.92, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure you are using a version of CFW or HFW. See the PS3 patching tutorial for Beacon for some helpful videos on this topic.
  2. Make sure you have the latest version of WebMAN, a homebrew plugin for PS3. This is the software that makes the spoof possible. Simply install the latest pkg on your PS3 if you don’t already have it.
  3. Add a new file called ps3-updatelist.txt to the root of your dev_hdd0 directory on your PlayStation 3. You can use WebMAN’s FTP feature to achieve this with your operating system’s file explorer or with an FTP client like FileZilla. The contents of the file are shown below.
  4. Reboot. Enable HEN and connect to PSN!
